Robert Moore Starts A Chain Reaction

There is a chain of good deeds making its way through the district.

It's started at Robert Moore School in Fort Frances where students yesterday paraded a lengthy paper chain through their halls to highlight their hundreds of acts of kindness performed over the past year.

Teacher Pam King says it builds on the Rachel Challenge presentation given to students last fall.

Rachel's Challenge is in honour of a student killed in the Columbine school shooting who encouraged others to start a chain reaction of kindness as a way of combating bullying.

Award Recognizes Student Involvement in Rachel's Challenge

The committee who helped bring Rachel's Challenge to the Rainy River district last fall is now recognizing students and schools who've formed Friends of Rachel clubs.

Gabi Peters, a student at Robert Moore School, is the first recipient of a new award

The committee is also planning to hand out scholarships to eligible students at Rainy River and Fort Frances High Schools and Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program.

There are now twenty active forest fires in northwestern Ontario.

Most new starts reported yesterday were in the far north.

There's just one active fire in the Rainy River District.

A lightning-caused fire on an island at Bluffpoint Lake, 55 kilometres north of Fort Frances, is now listed as being under control.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is anticipating the fire hazard to drop to low in the district with the forecast of rain.

Campbell Gives Some Support To Auto Insurance Bill

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell is giving her support to a private members bill targeting insurance rates.

Liberals claims the NDP-sponsored bill will lead to hirer rates in northern Ontario.

Campbell says allowing the bill to proceed will bring some clarification.

If passed, the bill will head to the committee level for further discussion.

Most of their students now come from Manitoba
