(John Rafferty photo)The Atikokan Metis Council is now officially part of the Ontario Metis Nation of Ontario.
The council, formed over a year ago, had been given interim status before a chartering ceremony could be held on weekend.
President Marlene Davidson says it's an important designation for the Metis people in the Atikokan area.
"That means we have all the backing of the Metis Nation of Ontario," says Davidson, and can take part in any of the projects going on and have the support of the Metis Nation."
Davidson says more than 60 families have registered as being Metis with the Council so far.
