Rainy River District Painted Pink

A tsunami of pink across the Rainy River district.

Schools, businesses and organizations all stood united yesterday against bullying and discrimination by wearing pink on International Day of Pink.

Trudy McCormick of Celebrating Diversity believes it will make a difference.

The event was started five years when students at a Nova Scotia school wore pink in support of a classmate who was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt.

Smoke Lingers Around Fort Frances

Smoke from a fire at the Couchiching First Nation dump is believed to the source of smoke in the Fort Frances area this morning.

Fire crews were called to the dump about 8 p.m. last night and were expected back on scene this morning.

Officials with the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service say the smoke was lingering low enough for some to report their buildings were on fire.

A change in wind may help blow it away.

Gravelle says the public can do their part by following burning rules and ensuring outdoor fires are fully extinguished.

Teachers Urged Back to Table

Ontario's education minister is pushing elementary school teachers to get back to discussions on their contracts.

Laurel Broten sent a letter to all 72 boards in the province urging teachers not to opt out of the talks and go straight to local bargaining.

If they do, she warns, they will have to meet whatever framework is worked out in the current forum.

President John Gordon says such cuts will only create longer waits at the border.

Another union spokesman says the job and budget reductions would certainly contradict Ottawa's commitment to border security.
