A coalition tried to keep the internationally-renowned research site open says the federal government is now in talks to sell it to an unknown buyer.
Spokesperson Diane Orihel says it's leaving scientists guessing about future research projects.
Orihel says three motions brought forward by the opposition to keep the centre open were recently struck down in closed door meeting by the Conservatives.
